Symbol of Magical Fraying - Errata and Clarification

2025.07.01

Hello Rulers!

The entire FOW team, with the help of our rules experts, has been thoroughly reviewing the functionality of the Symbol of Magical Fraying (card TOP-027) because its interaction with the Comprehensive Rules was not what we intended.

To make Symbol of Magical Fraying easier to understand and use, we are applying a minor but clarifying errata to that card. From now on, its requirement will be limited to public zones, reducing the time it takes to check this requirement during the game.

In addition, we are updating section 302.2 of the Comprehensive Rules, effective immediately, to make the operation of all cards that require checking cards in hidden zones for one, both, or all players during a game easier to apply and understand.

The errata to Symbol of Magical Fraying is the following:

Symbol of Magical Fraying (TOP-027, TOP-PRE)

[Enter] >>> If you don't control water cards in any non-ruler area area, wind cards in any non-ruler area area, water spells or wind spells, choose one;

-          Cancel target water spell with [Quickcast].

-          Cancel target wind spell with [Quickcast].

New Text

[Enter] >>> If you don't control water cards or wind cards in any non-ruler area public area, water spells or wind spells, choose one;

-          Cancel target water spell with [Quickcast].

-          Cancel target wind spell with [Quickcast].

And the update to the CR is the following:

302.2.     Areas are divided into "public area" and "hidden area". Each player can see the information of cards in a public area, unless prohibited by rules or effects. Each player cannot see the information of cards in a hidden area, except for a player specifically allowed to see them by rules or effects, or unless the cards are face-up in that area (see 302.2d.).

302.2a.      Each player can know or count the number of cards in an area regardless if it's public or hidden.

302.2b.      If a player who has access to hidden information wants to perform an action that requires knowledge or verification of that hidden information from another player that cannot see that hidden information, the player performing the action must show any hidden information required to perform the action. After performing the action, all shown information will become hidden information again.

302.2c.      If a player wants to perform an action that requires information of public areas that have cards whose information is hidden to that player, the player performs the action ignoring the cards in those public areas whose information is hidden to them.

302.2d.      Cards revealed to all players in a hidden area are considered "cards in a public area" for effects and abilities.

Thanks to this clarification and the CR update, when a player plays the [Enter] ability of Symbol of Magical Fraying, to fulfil the condition, the cards that player has that will be checked will be checked this way:

·         All face-up cards in public areas will be checked.

·         All face-down cards in public areas will be checked, but only if their controller has access to their information (due to rule 302.2b). If that player doesn't have access to that information, those cards won't be checked.

·         Face-up cards in hidden areas will be checked (due to rule 302.2d), despite the errata saying "public areas".

·         Face-down cards in hidden areas will not be checked, since the errata specifies "public areas".

We hope that with this clarification, both on the card and in the rules, Symbol of Magical Fraying becomes one of your options when building new decks.
